An elderly woman caused a disturbance at a restaurant when she arrived late for a birthday dinner reservation and was denied entry due to the kitchen being closed. The situation escalated into violence as the woman, Mary McGinley, and her group confronted the staff at the Miller and Carter restaurant in Liverpool’s Albert Dock.
McGinley, a 42-year-old grandmother, avoided immediate imprisonment after the incident. Liverpool Crown Court heard that on December 7, 2022, McGinley and her group arrived late for a booking made for 9:45 pm but were informed that the kitchen had closed. Despite being directed to the bar, they lingered outside the restaurant.
Tensions rose when two members of the party were denied alcohol due to lacking proper identification. The group was asked to leave but instead shouted at the staff and forced their way back inside. As the situation worsened, staff members had to defend themselves, with one using a chair for protection.
McGinley then resorted to violence, hitting one staff member with her shoe and attempting to punch another. The chef intervened, leading to a physical altercation where he was struck and left with injuries. The group left after being informed that the police had been called.
McGinley was later arrested in December 2023 and faced charges for assault, to which she pleaded guilty. Despite her troubled past and personal challenges, she received a suspended prison sentence and a rehabilitation requirement. Another individual involved in the incident received a conditional discharge for a public order offense.
