“Police Seize 11kg of Illicit Bushmeat in London Raid”

Date:

Police in southeast London have confiscated 11kg of illicit bushmeat, which included rats and antelope, during a recent operation. The raid led to the arrest of a 51-year-old man as part of a Metropolitan Police investigation into the illegal importation of meat that could pose health risks to consumers.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) highlighted that bushmeat is wild animal meat typically sourced from tropical regions through hunting. Specifically, the cane rat, known to be a pest in sub-Saharan Africa where it damages crops like sugarcane and maize, was among the seized items.

David Toms-Sheridan, Head of Investigations for the National Food Crime Unit in the South of England and Wales, emphasized the collaboration between authorities to combat such criminal activities. He mentioned ongoing efforts to disrupt the illegal meat trade and safeguard public health by preventing unsafe products from entering the market.

The FSA urged consumers to avoid purchasing or consuming illegally imported meats, including bushmeat, due to potential serious health hazards. They advised individuals to report any concerns about suspicious products to local authorities. The agency reiterated its commitment to monitoring and preventing illegal meat from entering the food supply chain.

Ongoing investigations are underway to delve further into the matter. Past instances, like a 2012 undercover investigation by BBC London, have exposed the prevalence of illegal meat, including cane rat meat, being openly sold at markets, such as Ridley Road Market as reported by Wales Online.
