“Millions from UK’s Largest Cash Robbery Still Hidden Underground 20 Years Later”

Date:

Millions of pounds from the largest cash robbery in Britain’s history may still be hidden underground twenty years later. Back in February 2006, violent criminals stole £53 million from the Securitas cash depot in Tonbridge, Kent. The robbery involved kidnapping the depot manager, Colin Dixon, and his family to gain access to the facility.

During the raid, seven masked individuals held depot staff at gunpoint as they loaded cash onto a truck. Due to space limitations, millions were left behind. Several individuals were convicted in 2008 for their involvement in the robbery.

Unfortunately, £32 million of the stolen money was never recovered. Kent’s chief constable, Tim Smith, expressed concerns that the old paper notes may have degraded over time if buried in the ground. He mentioned the challenges of tracing the missing cash due to its potential deterioration.

Reflecting on the unprecedented scale of the robbery, Chief Con Smith recalled the terrifying ordeal faced by the kidnapped family and the depot staff. Despite efforts over the years, he believes that at least one suspect remains at large, complicating the resolution of the case.

The robbers initiated the heist by impersonating police officers and coercing Mr. Dixon and his family to comply with their demands. Following the raid, a significant portion of the stolen money was recovered in various locations, but a substantial amount remains unaccounted for.

True crime author Howard Sounes characterized the gang as amateurs who underestimated the amount of money they would encounter. The sheer volume of cash posed challenges in handling and disposing of it, leading some individuals to stash their shares in different places.

As the investigation continues two decades later, Kent’s police chief urges anyone with information to come forward. Seeking justice for the victims, he emphasizes the importance of potential leads in apprehending remaining suspects and resolving the case comprehensively.
