“Wates Family Tragedy: Second Gap-Year Death”

Date:

The family of a young British woman who tragically lost her life in a motorcycle accident in Vietnam is experiencing a second devastating blow related to gap-year experiences. Orla Wates, 19, was involved in a crash on the Ha Giang Loop mountain road during her gap year trip in the country. Despite efforts by medical professionals, she did not survive the incident.

This incident mirrors the untimely death of her cousin, William Wates, who also passed away at the age of 19 while traveling in Honduras just before starting university. Both Orla and William were part of a wealthy construction family, with estimated family wealth in the millions.

Orla’s organs, including her liver, kidneys, and corneas, were donated to patients in need at the hospital where she was treated. Described as charming, independent, and humorous by her parents, Andy and Henrietta Wates, Orla’s passing has deeply affected her family.

Tragically, William Wates met a violent end during his travels in South and Central America, where he was robbed and killed by individuals he had met at a hotel. Despite the heartbreaking loss, the Wates family established the William Wates Memorial Trust in William’s honor, which has since raised substantial funds to help underprivileged children.

The Wates family has faced significant loss through these tragedies, but their commitment to charitable work and honoring the memories of their loved ones remains steadfast.
