Karen Newton and her husband Bill, both in their 60s, faced complications when they attempted to enter Canada but were turned back due to incorrect car paperwork, leading them back to the American border.
Karen, a retired primary school teacher with a clean record, possessed a valid US visa, while Bill’s had expired. Despite offering to cover their return flights to the UK, their request was denied, and they were taken to an office for further processing. Karen expressed confusion over being detained alongside Bill, questioning the rationale behind it.
According to Mrs. Newton’s account to the Guardian, she described the unsettling experience of being shackled and held at a border patrol station for three days, where she and Bill were detained separately and subjected to interrogation. Allegedly, she was accused of violating her visa terms by assisting Bill with holiday preparations, a claim she deemed unjust.
Subsequently, the couple was transferred to an ICE Processing Center in Tacoma, where they were separated, with Karen confined to a cell without access to the bunk bed, forcing her to sleep on the floor for a month. The situation improved when they were reunited briefly and managed to contact their son Scott for assistance. They were eventually released after enduring 42 days in custody, with Scott being informed by the Foreign Office that the US government shutdown had delayed their release.
Reflecting on their ordeal, Karen emphasized her innocence, stating she had not entered the country unlawfully and possessed all necessary documentation. Having returned to Hertfordshire, the couple expressed gratitude for their regained freedom, savoring the simple joys of everyday life after their harrowing experience. Karen highlighted the newfound appreciation for their freedom, recognizing its value only after having it stripped away.
