Artemis 2 Crew Safely Returns in Historic Splashdown

Date:

The crew members of Artemis 2 have safely returned to Earth following their historic lunar flyby, making a dramatic splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. Commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere at an incredible speed of Mach 33, a velocity not seen since NASA’s Apollo missions. Their Orion capsule, named Integrity, descended under full automated control.

After landing, Rick Henfling, the mission’s entry flight director, reported that the crew is in good health and high spirits. NASA officials have acknowledged some technical issues that arose during the mission, including a minor pressure control assembly fault in the propulsion system of the Orion spacecraft.

Looking ahead, NASA plans to continue the Artemis missions, with Artemis 3 scheduled for mid-2027 as the next crewed test flight. The agency aims to establish a permanent lunar base by 2029, with astronauts making regular trips to the Moon.

The successful return of the Artemis 2 crew marks a significant milestone in space exploration, with NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman praising the crew for their dedication and courage. The crew’s journey, which included a record-breaking lunar flyby, has inspired people worldwide and set the stage for future lunar missions.
