Date:

A picturesque Greek island, Ikaria, is renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, natural hot springs, and a remarkable number of long-living residents. With a land area of 99 square miles, Ikaria boasts a higher concentration of people over the age of 90 compared to anywhere else globally.

Studies have shown that approximately one in three individuals on this stunning island reach the age of 90, sparking scientific interest in unraveling the secrets behind their exceptional longevity. Researchers have attributed the islanders’ extended lifespans to their Mediterranean diets, regular siestas, and active intimate lives well into old age.

Anthropologists have long advocated for the benefits of fresh and nutritious Mediterranean diets, emphasizing the consumption of fish and olive oil as crucial for longevity and overall health. Ikaria is part of a select group of regions worldwide known as “blue zones,” where residents are believed to live the longest lives.

Accompanied by National Geographic, Dan Buettner, a prominent longevity expert, and his team have delved into the mysteries of blue zones, including Ikaria, to uncover the factors contributing to the remarkable longevity of its inhabitants. Despite past skepticism regarding the longevity claims of certain populations, Ikaria’s reputation as a haven for long-living individuals remains unchallenged.

The island’s residents, known for their longevity, often lack precise knowledge of their ages due to inadequate record-keeping in some villages. Notably, Ikaria’s reputation for longevity has attracted tourists, further validating the island’s exceptional status.

Research conducted in Greece has substantiated Ikaria’s claims of a high number of long-living individuals, with locals reaching the age of 90 at a significantly higher rate than Americans. Various studies have demonstrated that the island’s inhabitants experience better health outcomes, with lower incidences of cancer, cardiovascular disease, dementia, and depression.

A study from the University of Athens School of Medicine highlighted the dietary habits of Ikarians, revealing their consumption of substantial amounts of beans and fish, with infrequent meat consumption. The Ikaria Study also emphasized the islanders’ low intake of refined sugar and high consumption of olive oil.

Moreover, researchers noted that the islanders’ diets were rich in unprocessed olive oil, which promotes healthy cholesterol levels, alongside goat’s milk found in feta cheese, containing tryptophan known for its serotonin-boosting properties. The secret to the islanders’ longevity also lies in their stress-free lifestyles, regular physical activity, healthy eating patterns, social interactions, afternoon naps, and minimal levels of depression.

In interviews with Ikarians aged over 90, researchers discovered that many of them remained sexually active, shedding light on yet another aspect of their enduring and contented lives.
