A member of NATO had to scramble fighter jets when another member state’s aircraft violated its airspace, as per reports. Greek media stated that Greece dispatched fighters to intercept Turkish F-16s and a CN-235 naval cooperation aircraft.
Eleftheros Typos reported that five Turkish aircraft trespassed Greek airspace in the northeastern and southeastern Aegean region today, including four F-16 fighters, two of which were armed, and a single CN-235 naval cooperation aircraft. The Turkish planes were intercepted in accordance with international rules, without any engagement.
In a separate incident, RAF fighter jets were mobilized in the UK as a precaution against a suspected Russian bomber approaching the country. Two RAF Typhoons were launched from RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland, accompanied by a Voyager refuelling jet from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, heading towards Shetland.
According to The Telegraph, a Russian warplane stayed outside British airspace, leading the Typhoons to return to base without interception. Sources indicated that the deployment of the British jets was part of a broader NATO response.
Recent weeks have seen Russian warships and submarines passing near UK waters. John Healey disclosed that the UK and its allies monitored a Russian attack submarine and two spy submarines near vital undersea cables in the North Atlantic before their withdrawal. A British warship and aircraft were deployed to deter Moscow’s “malign” activities off the UK’s northern coast, as stated by the Defence Secretary.
Healey warned Vladimir Putin against damaging UK cables and pipelines, emphasizing serious consequences for any such actions. He stated that Putin exploited global distractions to pose the primary security threat to the UK.
During a press conference at Downing Street, Healey highlighted recent responses to increased Russian activity in the Atlantic north of the UK, in coordination with Norway and other allies.
