The tourist, a British national, unknowingly paid £1,480 (10,000 reais) for the meal, which should have cost only £15 (100 reais). Authorities reported that the payment terminal had been tampered with, leading to the inflated charge.
This incident is part of a trend where scammers target tourists at Brazilian beaches. In this case, a criminal was apprehended for deceiving a British tourist at Copacabana beach. The individual was linked to an organized scheme that primarily targeted foreigners, particularly in popular areas like Ipanema and Copacabana.
Rio’s tourist police, led by Patricia Alemany, are actively pursuing these fraudsters to protect tourists from falling victim to such scams. Despite their efforts, the lack of regulation for street vendors on the beaches fosters an environment conducive to these fraudulent activities, as highlighted by Alemany.
In a separate incident, a woman from Argentina was charged nearly £3,000 (20,000 reais) for corn on the cob with margarine, a steep overcharge from the actual price of £3 (20 reais). Another tourist, hailing from Colombia, was shockingly billed around £400 (2,500 reais) for a caipirinha, a popular Brazilian cocktail.
