“Soham Murderer Ian Huntley in Critical Condition After Prison Assault”

Date:

Soham murderer Ian Huntley is currently in critical condition following a brutal assault while in prison. The 52-year-old was airlifted to a hospital after being discovered injured in his cell at HMP Frankland, a maximum-security men’s prison in County Durham. The incident, which occurred around 9 am on Thursday, is believed to have been carried out by another inmate.

Durham Constabulary confirmed that they were alerted to the assault at HMP Frankland, where a male prisoner sustained serious injuries and was taken to the hospital. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack, with detectives collaborating with prison staff.

According to a source cited by The Sun, the chaotic scene resulted in Huntley being severely injured and unconscious after being struck with a metal pole by the assailant, who managed to access him in a prison workshop despite his high level of protection. The Prison Service spokesperson acknowledged the incident involving the inmate, stating that no further comments would be provided during the ongoing investigation.

Ian Huntley, a former school caretaker convicted of murdering 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in 2002, is serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 40 years. The tragic case exposed flaws in police vetting and child safeguarding procedures, leading to significant reforms in information sharing among law enforcement agencies. Huntley’s conviction prompted the Bichard Inquiry, which highlighted systemic failures in record-keeping, vetting practices, and intelligence sharing within law enforcement and social services.

This recent attack on Huntley is not the first at HMP Frankland, with a previous incident in 2010 where another inmate inflicted a severe wound on him. The prison has also housed other high-profile offenders, including Manchester Arena bomb plotter Hashem Abedi, who is facing charges for attacks on prison officers, and former Lostprophets frontman Ian Watkins, who tragically died from a stabbing at another facility.
