A significant rescue mission was initiated today following a boat fire and subsequent sinking at a well-known coastal location.
Dramatic events unfolded before 4pm on Saturday, April 18, as the Coast Guard was alerted to a fire aboard an 11-meter pleasure craft located a mile-and-a-half off the coast of Dun Laoghaire.
Within minutes of the distress call, a lifeboat from Dun Laoghaire RNLI reached the scene and successfully rescued the four adults on board, safely transporting them back to shore, according to reports from DublinLive.
Authorities, including Gardai, the Dun Laoghaire All Weather Lifeboat, Dublin Port tug, and Dublin Fire Brigade, swiftly responded to the incident. The fire was brought under control shortly after 5pm, resulting in the vessel ultimately sinking.
A spokesperson from the Department of Transport informed Dublin Live that at approximately 15:45, the Coast Guard received a distress call from the 11-meter pleasure craft with four adults on board reporting a fire. The vessel was situated about 1.5 miles northeast of Dun Laoghaire.
The spokesperson further stated, “MRCC Dublin immediately dispatched Dun Laoghaire RNLI, and by 15:56, the Dun Laoghaire RNLI Inshore Lifeboat had arrived at the scene, successfully evacuating the four adults and bringing them ashore for assessment at the RNLI station, where they were met by HSE and Fire Service personnel.
The Dun Laoghaire All Weather Lifeboat and Dublin Port tug remained on-site for monitoring purposes. Collaboration between MRCC Dublin, the Dun Laoghaire Coast Guard Unit, Dun Laoghaire RNLI, and Dublin Port was maintained throughout the operation. By approximately 17:15, the vessel fire was reported extinguished, leading to the eventual sinking of the vessel.
