Sweden’s military chief has raised concerns about a potential Russian move to capture the island of Gotland. Michael Claesson, the Swedish Chief of Defence, has cautioned that Moscow might initiate a land seizure at any moment to challenge NATO’s resolve. Claesson emphasized that the operation does not need to be extensive but rather serve as a strategic maneuver to test the political response.
While NATO exercises have historically focused on a potential Russian land offensive along the alliance’s eastern border, recent attention has shifted to the Baltic Sea region. Military simulations have simulated hypothetical Russian incursions on key islands like Gotland in Sweden, Bornholm in Denmark, and Hiiumaa and Saaremaa in Estonia.
Swedish military intelligence has also warned about the potential for Russia to escalate conflicts in the coming years. They have highlighted the possibility of Russian forces being redeployed closer to NATO territories if a resolution to ongoing conflicts is reached.
In a separate development, US President Donald Trump criticized NATO allies for what he perceives as inadequate support in the Iran conflict. Trump’s remarks, made during a recent event in Arizona, underscored the importance of self-reliance over dependence on external sources.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned the US decision to extend the period allowing Russia to sell oil despite Western sanctions. The move permits the purchase of Russian oil and petroleum products already onboard ships until mid-May, with the US citing energy supply concerns stemming from the US-Israel conflict with Iran.
Zelensky criticized the continuation of oil purchases from Russia, linking it directly to funding the war in Ukraine. Sanctions against Russia have been in effect since Putin’s military intervention in Ukraine in February 2022.
