The United Kingdom has been involved in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The UK’s Ministry of Defence has verified that an RAF fighter jet successfully intercepted an Iranian drone that was approaching Qatar.
This marks the first instance of a British aircraft taking down a missile or drone since the recent escalation in hostilities. British military jets have been conducting defensive operations in the region following the strikes by the US and Israel on Iran, which led to retaliatory actions from Tehran across the Middle East.
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating that on March 1, 2026, a Royal Air Force Typhoon, part of the joint UK–Qatar Typhoon Squadron, destroyed an Iranian drone heading towards Qatari airspace. The Typhoon jet, on a defensive air patrol, utilized an air-to-air missile to neutralize the threat, safeguarding Qatar’s airspace and British interests in the area.
This successful interception by the joint squadron marks a significant defensive operation in support of Qatar. Minister of Armed Forces Al Carns commended the RAF for their professionalism and effectiveness in intercepting the drone.
In a separate incident, a British counter-drone unit in Iraq thwarted an approaching Iranian drone targeting a coalition base housing UK personnel. Additionally, RAF Typhoons and F-35s have been engaged in defensive missions from a British base in Cyprus.
Although two Iranian missiles were launched towards the British base in Cyprus, the Government believes they were not deliberately aimed at the UK installations. Amid ongoing Iranian attacks, the Government has launched an extensive operation to assist British nationals in the Gulf region.
