“Cuba Travel Advisory: Essential Only as Flights Suspended”

Date:

The Foreign Office has updated its travel guidance due to the suspension of flights to and from a specific country. Travel to Cuba is now advised only for essential purposes as all international airports in the country are facing a shortage of aviation fuel.

Cuba is currently grappling with power outages and fuel scarcity, attributed to depleting oil reserves and the disruption of petroleum shipments following the US actions against Venezuela in January. The FCDO highlights severe infrastructure disruptions, frequent power cuts, and fuel deficits affecting essential services and transportation.

In response to the situation, some airlines have halted flights to Cuba until mid-June, with Air France among those suspending operations. Authorities in Cuba have implemented measures such as fuel rationing, reduced public services, and temporary adjustments in various sectors to conserve energy resources.

Notably, Terminal 2 at José Martí International Airport has been closed, leading to flight diversions to Terminal 3. Air France has announced flight suspensions between Paris and Havana, with potential reductions in departure options depending on the evolving circumstances. Travelers in Cuba are advised to monitor updates from airlines or tour operators, ensure travel documents are valid, and check visa requirements for onward journeys.

For individuals in Cuba, it is recommended to assess the necessity of staying, conserve essential resources like fuel and food, and prepare for potential disruptions due to the ongoing challenges in the country.
