Travelodge employees mistakenly provided a sex offender, Kyran Smith, access to a woman’s room at their Maidenhead branch, resulting in an assault. Smith, who had deceived reception staff by claiming to be the woman’s boyfriend, obtained the key card to her room in the early hours following a party in December 2022.
The victim, a woman in her 30s, expressed her dismay at being alone in a hotel for the first time and accused Smith of bypassing security measures by knowing her name. Travelodge’s offer of £30 as an apology was deemed inadequate by the woman, who criticized the hotel for failing to take responsibility for the incident.
Demanding procedural changes from Travelodge, the woman highlighted the need for improved security measures, questioning why someone was allowed into her room without alerting her. Travelodge responded by emphasizing their commitment to guest safety and adherence to security protocols.
Smith was subsequently convicted of sexual assault and trespass with intent to commit a relevant sexual offense after a trial at Reading Crown Court, receiving a seven-and-a-half-year sentence. Detective Constable Arshid Ali emphasized the seriousness of the crime and Thames Valley Police’s dedication to combating sexual violence.
A Travelodge spokesperson extended an apology to the victim, assuring a comprehensive review of room security policies to prevent similar incidents and enhance safety measures.
