New maps indicate that various regions in the UK are likely to experience snowfall this week.
Cities such as London, Birmingham, Plymouth, Stoke-on-Trent, Swansea, Belfast, and Glasgow, including their adjacent areas, may witness snow or icy conditions on Friday, as per the ECMWF weather model.
The maps reveal that significant parts of Scotland are expected to be covered in snow overnight on Friday, with the most intense snowfall anticipated in the Western Isles and Highlands. Additionally, there is a likelihood of snow accumulation in parts of Northern Ireland, specifically in County Antrim, Belfast, County Tyrone, and Londonderry by 9 am on Friday.
Across England, snow is predicted to fall over the Pennines and the Lake District overnight before extending to southern regions. Areas like London, west Cornwall, north Devon, and the outskirts of Bristol might also see snow in the morning, clearing by the afternoon except for some parts of south-west England.
Central England, including Lincolnshire and Staffordshire, as well as parts of Wales such as Swansea, could experience snowfall in the afternoon. Later in the evening, snowfall is expected to persist in large sections of Scotland and north-west England.
The Met Office has cautioned that Friday will be notably colder than preceding days, with snow anticipated in several regions, particularly in north-west England. Meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth mentioned in a forecast on YouTube that a significant change in the air mass on Thursday night into Friday will bring colder conditions, leading to frost in sheltered areas due to strong winds.
Shuttleworth also noted that rain will move in from the north and west, bringing frequent showers and snow at lower levels, along with a mix of hail and a risk of ice on Friday and into Saturday morning.
Weather maps from the Met Office depict unsettled conditions for Friday, with snowfall expected in various regions including north-west England, north Wales, and parts of Scotland, while other areas like south-west England may experience wintry weather.
Looking ahead, the Met Office’s long-range forecast for March 14 to March 23 suggests mostly changeable conditions, with periods of rain and strong winds, mainly in western and northern areas. However, drier intervals are anticipated, especially in the south and east, with temperatures near average overall but occasional colder spells bringing frost and hill snow.
