“Correctional Officer Jailed for Sending Explicit Content to Inmate”

Date:

A correctional officer engaged in sending explicit photos and videos to an inmate following the development of an intimate relationship while working together behind bars. The situation came to light when the inmate started behaving possessively towards the officer and physically assaulting other inmates in her defense.

Zoe Oldham, the officer in question, also received financial transactions from a relative of the inmate, Lewis Smith. Their inappropriate relationship was exposed when Smith’s overprotective behavior escalated into violence towards other inmates, prompting an investigation that led to the discovery of a hidden mobile phone in his cell containing over 1,000 incriminating messages. These messages unveiled the true nature of their connection, revealing that Oldham had served as a guard at HMP Risley in Warrington for five years before engaging in an intimate relationship with Smith.

The communication between them included explicit images and financial transactions amounting to at least £350 being transferred to Oldham’s account. While the prosecutor noted suggestions of a sexual relationship, specific acts were not detailed. Concerns arose in March 2023 when Smith’s overprotective behavior sparked assaults on inmates he felt had disrespected Oldham. Subsequent investigations uncovered the hidden phone, leading to the revelation of their extensive communication.

Oldham, hailing from Accrington, Lancashire, disclosed one count of misconduct in a public office during a prior court appearance. She was sentenced to eight months in prison for her actions. The judge emphasized the breach of trust involved in Oldham’s conduct, highlighting the negative impact on prison discipline and her colleagues. Despite her remorse and personal challenges, immediate imprisonment was deemed necessary to uphold the integrity of the prison system and deter similar misconduct in the future.

Smith, residing in Gorton, Manchester, received an additional eight-month prison sentence for possessing a mobile phone and a class C drug (anabolic steroids) while incarcerated at HMP Wymott in Lancashire. This case underscored the serious consequences of inappropriate relationships between prison staff and inmates, emphasizing the importance of upholding professional boundaries within correctional facilities.
