“Families Demand Action After Teen’s Copycat Plot”

Date:

The families of three young girls who tragically lost their lives in the Southport stabbings have expressed deep concern over a teenager who narrowly avoided jail after expressing intentions to carry out a copycat attack.

Axel Rudakubana, who committed the brutal knife attack that claimed the lives of Elsie Dot Stancombe, Bebe King, and Alice da Silva Aguiar at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in July 2024, was 17 at the time of the incident.

Recently, a 17-year-old boy received sentencing at Liverpool Crown Court for his disturbing actions. He had contacted the police in August last year, stating his desire to emulate Axel, having acquired knives and a green hoodie resembling the killer’s attire.

In a statement issued by their legal representatives, the families of the victims raised serious alarms, pointing out that despite the teenager being flagged to the anti-terror programme Prevent twice, no action was taken before his apprehension.

During the Southport Inquiry, it was revealed that Axel, also known as AR, had been referred to Prevent three times before perpetrating the tragic attack.

The families expressed disbelief at the similarities between the circumstances leading to their daughters’ deaths and the recent events involving the teenage boy. They criticized the failure of authorities to prevent such incidents and underscored the need for decisive action to safeguard the public.

The court heard that the teenager idolized Rudakubana, describing him as a “hero” and sharing similar interests in violent ideologies. Despite pleading guilty to possessing information relevant to terrorism, he was spared a custodial sentence and instead handed a three-year youth rehabilitation order and criminal behavior order.

Legal counsel for the families, Chris Walker, highlighted the concerning details surrounding the teenager’s background and actions. He emphasized the need for accountability and reform in light of the systemic failures exposed by the Southport Inquiry.

The families vowed to pursue further inquiries into the case and demanded answers regarding the apparent lapses in the Prevent system. They stressed the importance of restoring trust in the system through meaningful reforms and immediate actions to prevent future tragedies.

The chairman of the Southport Inquiry, Sir Adrian Fulford, is scheduled to release a report on the initial phase of the hearings in the coming month.
