In a recent development, King Charles has taken the decision to revoke honorary titles from individuals, a move that has been implemented nine times this month alone. Notably, the King has stripped nine individuals of their OBEs (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in cases involving criminal convictions, misconduct, or removal from regulatory bodies. Among those affected is former Scottish Rugby player Stuart Hogg, who lost his MBE following his admission of guilt to charges of domestic abuse against his estranged wife Gillian.
Stuart Hogg, a former Glasgow Warriors fullback with a distinguished career boasting a century of caps for his country and involvement in British and Irish Lions tours, had received an MBE for his rugby accomplishments in the 2024 New Year honors. However, following reports of his abusive behavior towards Gillian, there were calls for the honor to be revoked, leading to its cancellation as per an official notice in The Gazette.
Another individual who faced a similar fate is Paul Allen Rose, the founder of Barrow’s Owl Sanctuary in Cumbria, who was convicted in May 2024 for animal cruelty offenses. The Gazette reported on March 5 that Rose had his MBE title removed due to his criminal conviction.
These incidents highlight the King’s firm stance on maintaining the integrity of honorary titles and upholding standards of conduct among recipients.
