A woman has been sentenced to four and a half years in jail for fabricating accusations of rape against 10 men she met on dating apps. Stacy Sharples, 31, admitted to falsely incriminating the men, causing them to endure time in police custody and on bail without ever facing charges.
Sharples confessed to perverting the course of justice in Bolton crown court, admitting to misleading one victim by claiming the police would not press charges, reveling in her deceit. The Honorary Recorder for Bolton, Judge Nicholas Clarke KC, condemned her actions, emphasizing the serious repercussions the false allegations had on the men’s reputations and lives.
While acknowledging Sharples’ mental health issues and low IQ, Judge Clarke highlighted the damage she inflicted on both her victims and genuine victims who rely on the justice system for support. He urged real victims not to be discouraged from coming forward and commended those who bravely testified against Sharples, leading her to admit her falsehoods.
The court revealed that Sharples’ fabrications cost taxpayers an estimated £120,000 due to wasted police, legal, and medical resources. One instance involved Sharples falsely accusing Reece Lockett of rape after a consensual encounter, leading to his unwarranted arrest and legal ordeal. Similar unfounded allegations were made against other men, causing distress and unwarranted legal scrutiny.
Despite claiming mental health issues, Sharples’ manipulative behavior and repeated false accusations led to severe consequences for her victims. The court recognized the detrimental impact of her actions on both the accused individuals and the broader criminal justice system, diverting attention and resources away from genuine cases.
In her defense, Sharples’ lawyer, Hunter Gray, struggled to provide a satisfactory explanation for her actions, noting her ongoing difficulty in taking full responsibility. However, he acknowledged some signs of remorse and insight from Sharples.
Detective Sergeant Steven Gilliland emphasized the seriousness with which authorities handled Sharples’ false reports, underscoring the commitment to thorough investigations and justice for genuine victims of rape. Despite giving Sharples multiple opportunities to clarify her claims, the evidence consistently disproved her allegations, leading to the pursuit of justice against her for her criminal actions.
