“Project Gigabit: UK Homes to Get Free Internet Upgrade”

Date:

A new interactive map has identified over a million homes in the UK that qualify for a government-sponsored internet upgrade at no cost. This initiative, known as Project Gigabit, aims to provide lightning-fast gigabit-capable broadband to communities that are currently underserved by internet providers.

The government has set a target for 99% of properties and businesses to have access to gigabit-capable internet by 2032. The implementation of Project Gigabit, which commenced in 2021, has significantly accelerated the rate at which outdated connections are being upgraded.

During the current phase of the nationwide project, more than 750 premises are being connected to high-speed internet daily. The upgrades are being rolled out in various towns and areas as indicated on the map below.

The Project Gigabit is a comprehensive initiative that will benefit regions throughout the UK. The map highlights the specific areas in England and Wales that are part of this substantial upgrade project.

As part of Project Gigabit, Openreach, in collaboration with the government, is investing up to £1.2 billion to deploy full fiber technology to more than 297,000 homes and businesses in rural areas. Additionally, over 30 contracts have been signed with various companies to further expand the project’s reach.

Under the broader project, there is a Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme that offers eligible households vouchers of up to £4,500 to assist in installing gigabit-capable broadband. This scheme is currently open for new projects that fall outside existing coverage plans or contracts.

Telecoms minister Liz Lloyd emphasized the positive impact of these upgrades, particularly in rural areas where slow internet speeds have hindered online activities for many. The ongoing government-funded upgrades are bridging the digital divide and enhancing connectivity for households and businesses across the country.
