Hospital Faces Backlash Over Delayed Pain Relief for Patient

Date:

A son expressed his dismay over a hospital’s handling of his mother’s care, noting a significant delay in receiving necessary medication before her passing. Linda Lockett, who battled interstitial lung disease, had been prescribed oral morphine for pain management at home. However, her condition deteriorated suddenly, leading to her admission to Royal Stoke University Hospital.

During her hospital stay, medical staff discovered a severe blockage in Linda’s intestines, causing significant distress. Despite being informed that her prognosis was grim, it took over 25 hours for the hospital to provide appropriate pain relief. Sean, Linda’s son, recounted the ordeal, highlighting the lack of urgency in addressing his mother’s needs.

The medical team eventually prescribed the necessary medication after prolonged delays, leaving Sean deeply disappointed by the situation. He emphasized the importance of timely and compassionate care for patients in critical conditions, underscoring the need for hospitals to prioritize patient well-being. Sean has formally lodged a complaint to address the concerning lapses in his mother’s care.

Royal Stoke Hospital acknowledged Sean’s grievances, with Chief Nurse Ann-Marie Riley issuing an apology for the distressing experience endured by Linda and her family. The hospital has initiated an investigation into the matter and offered support to the family through their patient advice and liaison team.

The incident serves as a reminder of the essential role hospitals play in providing quality care to patients in need, emphasizing the importance of efficient and compassionate healthcare services in times of crisis.
