“Greed and Betrayal: Liverpool couple seeks sentence appeal”

Date:

A couple in Liverpool, Gary and Diane Mansell, have made an appeal to overturn their sentences after being found guilty of defrauding Gary’s elderly parents of over £100,000. The duo, who wanted to become wealthy, were convicted of fraud and money laundering in November 2023 and were sentenced to six years in prison by Judge David Swinnerton. They are scheduled to challenge their convictions and the length of their imprisonment at the Court of Appeal.

The Mansells took advantage of Gary’s parents, Fred and Enid, who had to leave their long-time family home due to health issues. The couple misused their power of attorney to sell the family home below market value, redirecting the funds for personal luxuries like converting their garage into a living space, expensive holidays, and lavish purchases.

Despite the stolen funds supporting their extravagant lifestyle, Diane expressed disdain for caring for her in-laws, revealing a troubling family dynamic. The prosecution estimated around £218,000 was taken, but settled on £117,000 after accounting for various expenses. Enid passed away before legal action, and Fred expressed despair during court proceedings.

Judge Swinnerton condemned the Mansells’ actions as driven by greed and vanity, resulting in the destruction of a family. The defense highlighted health concerns for Gary in prison and portrayed Diane as a family pillar now facing separation. The judge’s parting words emphasized the shame the couple should feel for their actions.
