“MenB Meningitis Outbreak in Kent Raises Transmission Concerns”

Date:

Scientists are concerned that the strain of meningitis responsible for the deadly outbreak in Kent has evolved to spread more quickly. Health officials have identified 13 out of 29 cases in the current outbreak as belonging to the meningitis B (menB) strain, which is a severe bacterial form of the infection. Normally, menB is only detected in isolated cases each year in the UK, as it typically requires close and prolonged contact to transmit.

The cluster of infections linked to a nightclub in Canterbury has raised fears among scientists that the menB strain may be mutating to enhance its transmission rate. Professor Robin May, the chief scientific officer at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), highlighted the unusual nature of this outbreak compared to previous patterns. He noted that the large number of cases originating from a single event is unexpected, indicating a potential change in transmission dynamics of the bacteria.

In the past, viral meningitis caused by the menC strain was the primary concern in the UK until a vaccine was introduced in the 1990s, leading to a significant decline in cases. Currently, schoolchildren receive the MenACWY vaccine in Year 9, with additional doses available for those who missed it up to age 25. However, the MenB strain is not covered by this vaccine.

The introduction of a separate MenB vaccine for infants eleven years ago has provided protection for young children, but individuals born before May 1, 2015, may not have received this vaccine, creating an immunity gap among older students and adolescents who are at higher risk of meningitis. Efforts are being made to address this gap, with calls for broader access to the MenB vaccine for students as part of routine immunization schedules.
