A man in his 40s triggered a significant police response while working out in a park with a weighted gym vest. The incident occurred in Mandley Park, Salford, when armed officers were called to the scene following reports of a suspicious individual wearing a vest and carrying what appeared to be wires.
Initially, there was widespread panic online as images and videos circulated, wrongly suggesting that the man was wearing a “suicide bomb” vest. However, Greater Manchester Police later clarified that it was a false alarm. The man was actually wearing a weighted gym vest and carrying a skipping rope as part of his exercise routine in the outdoor gym at the park.
The man, who chose to remain anonymous due to safety concerns, explained that he uses the weighted vest and skipping rope regularly to improve his fitness, following medical advice related to his diabetes type two and heart condition. Despite the misunderstanding and being surrounded by armed officers, he cooperated with the police’s instructions, was briefly detained, and then released without further action.
Acknowledging the concerns raised by the incident in the park located in a Jewish community, the man emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety and cooperation with law enforcement. He expressed understanding towards the police response and highlighted the need for vigilance in today’s world.
Following the incident, GMP confirmed that there was no ongoing threat to the community and expressed gratitude for the swift response of the police. Representatives from the Jewish community also appreciated the police’s actions and the support provided by security organizations in keeping the community safe during such incidents of heightened anxiety.
