“Revamp Plans Underway for Neglected Shopping Center”

Date:

Plans are in motion to revamp a mostly deserted shopping center where multiple stores have closed down, with work set to begin in the next two years.

The Maltings in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, has been largely empty for an extended period, deteriorating over time, prompting worries about its condition. Since 2023, the East Staffordshire Borough Council has been crafting regeneration plans and acquired the adjacent former Co-op building as part of a broader site redevelopment strategy.

A planning application has been submitted to demolish most of the existing structures to make room for a new development. The proposal entails demolishing 19 out of the 24 units, many of which date back to the 1960s.

Although a final decision is pending due to delays in the planning process, council leaders anticipate progress soon. During a recent meeting, Councillor Phillip Hudson expressed concerns about the prolonged neglect of the site.

Hudson stated, “It’s disheartening for a resident who has lived there for 43 years to see people on social media calling the Maltings a disgrace. It’s high time the council took action and visibly made changes.”

Described as run-down, with numerous long-term vacancies, the site is awaiting rejuvenation, as reported by the Express. The current plan involves temporary utilization of the cleared area for food vendors and market stalls until a permanent redevelopment scheme is implemented.

Councillor Louise Walker, in charge of regeneration, mentioned delays in the planning process, including consultation with Historic England, as reasons for the hold-ups. She noted, “Their detailed assessment of the area and the potential impact on the High Street caused delays.”

Walker confirmed that the initial project phase involves demolishing and landscaping the site. She added, “By the end of the year, you will witness some changes.”

The council aims to restore the site for use and enhance the town center, anticipating that the revitalization efforts will breathe new life into an area plagued by numerous vacant units in recent times.
