“Prince Harry and Meghan Back Ruling Against Social Media Giants”

Date:

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have released a strong statement following a ruling in a US court that held Meta and Google responsible for a woman’s social media addiction during her childhood. The jury in Los Angeles declared that Google, the parent company of YouTube, and Meta, which oversees Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, intentionally designed their platforms to keep young users addicted through customized algorithms, disregarding their well-being.

The lawsuit, filed by a young woman who claimed that her social media addiction worsened her mental health problems, could impact numerous similar cases accusing social media companies of harming children.

In response to the verdict, Harry and Meghan expressed their support for families affected by the issue. They emphasized the significance of the ruling, stating that it signals a shift towards holding tech firms accountable for their actions.

In a detailed statement on their official website, the couple hailed the recent legal outcomes as significant wins for families, advocates, and youth globally. They criticized the product design of social media platforms, highlighting that the systems are engineered to exploit rather than safeguard users.

Following the court decision, Meta and YouTube contested the jury’s conclusions in separate statements. Meta’s spokesperson disagreed with the ruling, emphasizing the complexity of teen mental health and denying a direct link to a single app. Similarly, Google defended YouTube as a streaming platform rather than a social media site.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have long advocated for increased protections for young individuals online. They have commended the efforts to hold tech giants accountable for creating unsafe environments for children.

Last year, Harry and Meghan unveiled a tribute in New York City for young individuals who lost their lives due to social media-related harm. Additionally, their Archewell Foundation introduced the Parents’ Network initiative to support parents dealing with the repercussions of online harm.
