The Met Office has identified the regions in the UK where snow is expected to fall today. This forecast comes amidst weather maps indicating that some parts of the country may see over 15cm of snow accompanied by subzero temperatures. Despite the upcoming month being April, the UK is currently experiencing a cold spell due to low-pressure systems ushering in Arctic weather from the northwest.
The prevailing icy conditions are set to persist through today, with a gradual rise in temperatures expected by midweek as a high-pressure system from the Atlantic takes hold, moving away the low-pressure system to the north. According to Met Office forecaster Honor Criswick, the morning remains cold, but a shift to westerly winds will bring milder Atlantic air, making the upcoming days feel less chilly compared to recent times.
Today, the Met Office predicts that northern regions will face snow, primarily over hilly areas in the morning, with conditions improving later in the day. The areas most likely to experience snow are the elevated regions of Scotland, particularly the Highlands, the Cairngorms, Glencoe, Lochaber, and areas surrounding Ben Nevis.
Moreover, there is a possibility of wintry showers across the Southern Uplands and higher routes through the Pennines, although any snowfall in northern England is anticipated to be confined to hilltops. The Met Office states that blustery showers in the north will gradually diminish during the day, while the south will remain mainly dry with sunny intervals and a chance of a few showers, with winds easing.
Weather maps depict temperatures at -1°C in central Scotland at midday today, with most of the country experiencing low single-digit temperatures. Northern Scotland may see as much as 16cm of snow accumulation.
