Police have provided an important update following a car incident involving pedestrians in a city center in the UK during the weekend. Derbyshire Constabulary revealed that a man has been charged in connection with the collision.
According to authorities, a Suzuki Swift struck pedestrians in Friar Gate, Derby, around 9:30 pm on Saturday, resulting in seven individuals sustaining injuries, some of which were severe. All seven victims were hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, with four already discharged.
The accused, Sandhu Ponnachan, 36, residing in Chariot Close, Alvaston, faces charges including six counts of Section 18 GBH with intent, one count of attempted Section 18 GBH with intent, one count of dangerous driving, and one count of possessing a bladed item. Ponnachan, originally from India but living in Derby, is in custody and is scheduled to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
Chief Superintendent Emma Aldred expressed that the incident has profoundly affected the Derby community and extended sympathies to the injured, their families, and witnesses. She acknowledged the public, partner agencies, businesses, media, and the community for their cooperation in the investigation process.
A representative from the Crown Prosecution Service, Janine McKinney, confirmed the decision to prosecute Ponnachan based on evidence gathered during the police inquiry, emphasizing the importance of pursuing legal proceedings in the public interest.
Authorities urge anyone with relevant CCTV, dashcam, or mobile footage to come forward to aid the investigation. They also requested the public’s cooperation to avoid speculating online or elsewhere to ensure a fair judicial process for all involved.
