“Man Assaulted by Police Receives Substantial Compensation”

Date:

An individual who underwent urgent eye surgery after being arrested and reportedly assaulted by law enforcement has received a substantial monetary compensation.

Anthony Giblin, aged 59, sustained a fractured eye socket and faced potential vision loss in his right eye due to a physical altercation post-arrest. He asserted that four officers forcefully shoved him onto a cell bed, stripped him down, and ignored his pleas for help, leaving him injured for 10 minutes.

The incident transpired in July 2021 when Anthony was apprehended on suspicion of violating a court order and transported to Swinton police station in Greater Manchester.

Being one of three male witnesses in the independent Baird Inquiry, which primarily focused on the treatment of individuals in Greater Manchester Police custody, Anthony played a pivotal role in shedding light on unlawful arrests, strip searches, and instances of humiliation within the system.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has now resolved Anthony’s lawsuit through an out-of-court settlement, awarding him a substantial undisclosed sum.

Despite undergoing an emergency procedure to alleviate eye swelling, Anthony continues to experience lasting numbness and a slight but permanent decline in eyesight, in addition to enduring psychological trauma from the distressing incident.

Recounting the harrowing encounter, Anthony expressed his profound distress and loss of trust in the law enforcement system, emphasizing the need for respectful treatment and accountability.

Legal representatives at Broudie Jackson Canter argued that the officers’ actions were part of a broader pattern of misconduct highlighted in the Baird Inquiry report, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

Following the episode, Anthony was rushed to Salford Royal Hospital for critical medical intervention, preventing potential blindness in his right eye.

Reflecting on the aftermath, Anthony detailed the physical and emotional turmoil he endured, highlighting the profound impact on his life and the lack of accountability within the system.

Lauren Halliday, a civil liberties attorney at Broudie Jackson Canter, underscored the severe repercussions of the incident, emphasizing the need for police accountability and protection of individuals’ rights during apprehension.

A spokesperson for GMP confirmed the resolution of the claim without prejudice, signifying a resolution outside of formal legal proceedings.
