A tragic incident unfolded as a hair salon owner passed away following her first-time use of cocaine during a New Year’s Eve celebration. Francesca Phillips, aged 34, experienced a heart attack after her husband purchased a gram of cocaine for £80 to mark the occasion with something different. Distressingly, it took emergency services 90 minutes to respond to the frantic 999 calls made by her husband.
Francesca’s husband, Darren, had not used the Class A drug since his teenage years, and Francesca had never tried it before. Despite their initial concerns and lack of plans to continue using the substance, they decided to proceed, leading to Francesca feeling unwell and eventually turning blue.
The subsequent inquiry revealed that the senior clinician present during the incident made questionable decisions that are now under scrutiny by a misconduct panel. The couple’s evening on December 31, 2022, started with a quiet night in, playing video games and having drinks. They each consumed small amounts of cocaine and cannabis, after which Francesca began experiencing severe discomfort and vomiting.
As her condition deteriorated, multiple 999 calls were made, but the ambulance’s delayed arrival hindered immediate medical intervention. Despite resuscitation efforts, Francesca could not be revived and was pronounced dead in the early hours of the morning.
Following the tragic event, remorse was expressed by Darren, cautioning against drug use. Witnesses at the inquest shared their frustration over the delayed response and highlighted areas for improvement in emergency services. Investigations pointed towards the significant role cocaine played in Francesca’s death, leading to legal actions against the drug supplier.
Moreover, scrutiny was placed on the actions of a specialist paramedic at the scene, who made critical decisions that were deemed unjustifiable and contrary to standard practices. The paramedic’s subsequent resignation and ongoing professional inquiry have raised questions about the handling of the medical emergency.
Family members and officials emphasized the dangers of drug use, particularly among young individuals, urging caution and awareness of the potential consequences. The tragic loss and ensuing investigations serve as a somber reminder of the risks associated with substance abuse.
