A mother of three from Gaza shared the heartbreaking moment she discovered her residence had been obliterated in an Israeli bombing incident. Alaa Radwan escaped Palestine in 2024 due to frequent airstrikes near their temporary shelter. Currently residing in Egypt, Alaa plans to pursue a Master’s degree in London with her family in the coming months.
Alaa recounted the distressing news of her home’s destruction when a neighbor sent her a photograph showing the severe damage. The property, which she and her husband had recently purchased, was reduced to rubble shortly after Hamas’s tragic events on October 7. Forced to evacuate following a warning from the Israeli military on her birthday, Alaa and her family sought refuge in Deir Al-balah within the Gaza Strip.
During their displacement, Alaa, her husband, and their young children shared a single room for safety amidst the ongoing airstrikes. Facing the harrowing reality of their demolished home through images shared in a WhatsApp group, the family saw the once-furnished space now in ruins, with cables dangling and a large breach leading to the outside.
Alaa expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their belongings, stating that the experience had detached her from material possessions. Subsequently, a nearby bombing incident prompted their decision to leave Gaza for Egypt, where they embarked on rebuilding their lives from scratch. Despite the challenges, Alaa remained hopeful for a better future after securing funds to relocate to the UK for her academic pursuit.
Reflecting on the past, Alaa acknowledged that life in Gaza had irrevocably changed, with the community and familiar surroundings forever altered by the conflicts. She emphasized the significance of support received through donations for their relocation, underscoring the transformative impact it would have on her family’s journey ahead.
