TUI Faces Legal Action Over Deadly Illness Outbreak

Date:

TUI expresses sympathy for families impacted by a deadly illness outbreak in Cape Verde, where over 1,700 individuals have initiated legal proceedings against the travel company following sickness at a resort linked to the outbreak. An attorney described it as an unprecedented case resulting in numerous fatalities.

A spokesperson for Tui conveyed deep sorrow over the tragic losses and offered condolences to affected families. Emphasizing customer health and safety as their top priority, the company stated that they have protocols in place to assist customers falling ill during vacations, ensuring access to necessary medical care and support within the resort.

The spokesperson stressed the importance of promptly reporting illnesses to their teams at the destination to facilitate appropriate assistance. TUI continues to adhere to FCDO guidance and collaborates with hotel partners and relevant authorities as needed.

Irwin Mitchell, a legal firm, reported that eight British individuals have died after contracting a highly contagious bacterial infection, shigella, during visits to Cape Verde. Jatinder Paul, an expert lawyer at the firm, highlighted the severity of the situation, expressing concerns over the number of deaths resulting from the illnesses.

Among those seeking legal recourse is Alisha Hussain, 21, who experienced severe health issues, including vomiting blood and seizures, while staying at the Riu Karamboa resort. She was rushed to the hospital after losing consciousness, with her friend seeking help from hotel staff as she choked on her vomit, recounting it as the worst illness she had ever endured.

Additionally, relatives of two deceased men who suffered gastric illnesses while at the same resort have joined legal actions. The legal team is pursuing all cases against TUI, emphasizing the responsibility of the travel company to ensure customer safety during package holidays to prevent illness outbreaks.

Mark Watts, 55, and his wife Tracy, 56, engaged solicitors after their holiday turned chaotic due to health issues. Tracy, who has Type 1 diabetes, experienced severe symptoms requiring urgent medical attention, believing she had an allergic reaction to antibiotics given for treatment. The couple reported poor hygiene practices at the resort, including chefs handling raw meat without gloves and unsanitary conditions in the restaurant.

Furthermore, holidaymakers, including a six-month-old infant, contracted various gastric illnesses and parasitic infections like E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella, and Cryptosporidium. Alleged video evidence showed unsanitary food practices and substandard accommodations.

Tragically, individuals like Karen Pooley, Mark Ashley, and David Smith faced medical complications leading to their deaths during their stays at Riu hotels in Cape Verde. The incidents have raised concerns about the overall safety and hygiene standards at the properties.
