Pope Leo reaffirms commitment to advocating against the Iran conflict despite criticism from Donald Trump. The Catholic Church leader emphasized that the Vatican’s calls for peace and reconciliation are grounded in Gospel teachings and expressed no apprehension towards the Trump administration.
Following Trump’s disparaging remarks towards the Pope regarding his views on the Iran war, Pope Leo urged political figures to pursue peaceful resolutions. Trump, in a social media statement on Truth Social, labeled the Pope as “ineffective on crime” and detrimental to foreign policy, insinuating that without his presidency, Pope Leo would not hold his position.
Responding to Trump’s criticisms, Pope Leo, while speaking to journalists aboard a papal plane, highlighted the disparity between his message rooted in the Gospel and the President’s actions. He declared his unwavering dedication to the Church’s mission in the contemporary world.
The first American-born pope clarified that his plea for peace was not a direct attack on any individual, including Trump. In contrast, Trump launched a scathing attack on the Pope, questioning his leadership abilities and political stance, suggesting the Pope should distance himself from leftist ideologies.
Trump’s criticism persisted as he returned from Florida to Washington, where he continued to express his disapproval of Pope Leo to reporters. Trump even went as far as disavowing the Pope’s stance on nuclear armament, further widening the divide between the two figures.
In a symbolic gesture, Trump shared an image portraying himself with saintly attributes reminiscent of Jesus Christ, surrounded by various admirers. These events unfolded after Pope Leo led an evening prayer service at St. Peter’s Basilica, coinciding with US-Iran negotiations in Pakistan amidst a fragile ceasefire. Although not directly naming the United States or Trump, the Pope’s remarks appeared directed at US officials who justified military actions using religious justifications.
