Their office has outlined that the upcoming days will emphasize mental health, community resilience, and support for veterans and their families, in addition to private meetings and special projects. Despite no longer representing the Royal Family, concerns have arisen regarding the funding source for the trip, potential costs to Australian taxpayers, and the financial gains the couple may accrue during their time Down Under.
Meghan is set to participate in a significant commercial event by being featured in an interview at a “girls’ weekend” retreat in Sydney, where tickets are priced at £1,400 each. VIP tickets, costing £1,670, offer attendees a group table photo opportunity with the duchess.
Reports suggest that Meghan’s appearance fee for this event could be substantial, estimated to be around $250,000. On the other hand, Harry is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech at the InterEdge Psychosocial Safety Summit in Melbourne, with ticket prices ranging from £525 to £1,250. A portion of the proceeds from this summit is expected to go to the charity Lifeline.
Despite assertions from Harry and Meghan’s camp that the trip is privately funded, a petition on Change.org has garnered over 45,000 signatures demanding no taxpayer funding for the visit. Security measures have been heightened by the New South Wales Police Force and Victoria Police to ensure public safety during the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s visit.
Security expert Tony Loughran suggested that the security costs for the visit could amount to “tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars.” Harry has been navigating security concerns, particularly in the UK, where he has been advocating for the reinstatement of taxpayer-funded security following his decision to step back as a working royal.
The couple’s current visit to Australia is notably different from their previous tour in 2018, as it excludes public walkabouts due to security and cost considerations. Harry and Meghan’s commitment to both charitable endeavors and commercial engagements continues to draw attention and scrutiny as they navigate their post-royal roles.
