The loved ones of a young man from Lanarkshire who suffered a life-altering brain injury at 17 have raised over £21,000 for his care. Debbie Dixon shared that her son Daniel, now 22, was known as the “class clown” before a serious cycling accident in 2020. After being hit by a car while riding home, Daniel was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s head injury unit, leaving his parents shocked.
Debbie described the incident as a head-on collision at 60 miles per hour, resulting in a severe head injury with no other broken bones. Doctors had to remove a significant portion of Daniel’s skull to reduce brain swelling. Despite the grim prognosis, Daniel survived and now requires constant care, only able to communicate through gestures like fist bumps and smiles.
Following the accident, Daniel received care at Hairmyres Hospital for two and a half years before being moved to a specially adapted flat in Hamilton. Due to his unrehabilitatable condition, his family pays for his care, including expensive physiotherapy sessions. A recent fundraising event organized by family friends raised £21,000 to support Daniel’s ongoing needs.
The fundraiser, held at a Glasgow hotel, brought together hundreds of supporters, with Daniel enjoying the festivities in his kilt. The money raised will help cover his medical expenses and purchase specialized equipment. Debbie also hopes to treat Daniel to a trip to Amsterdam, highlighting the challenges of accessible travel with his wheelchair. She emphasizes the importance of cycling safety, urging everyone, especially children, to wear helmets for protection.
