Elderly Essex Boys Murderer Spotted After Release

Date:

An elderly man, Michael Steele, who spent nearly three decades in prison for the Essex Boys murders, has been photographed for the first time since his release. Steele, 83, was seen in the county, wearing a grey fleece and jeans, engaging in DIY activities outside a house in his old neighborhood.

After serving his life sentence for the killings of Tony Tucker, Pat Tate, and Craig Rolfe in Rettendon, Essex, Steele was released last May. Along with his accomplice Jack Whomes, Steele was convicted of the murders, but doubts persist regarding the validity of the convictions.

The Criminal Cases Review Commission is currently reevaluating the 1995 case after receiving a report from retired Met detective David McKelvey. The report, submitted by McKelvey’s investigation firm TM-Eye, prompted a request for forensic testing on key exhibits, such as shotgun shell casings and other items recovered from the murder scene.

Despite being portrayed in a film by EastEnders actor Billy Murray, Steele’s release was not without controversy. The Justice Secretary initially delayed his release, but a Parole Board hearing later confirmed his eligibility for release. Restrictions on Steele’s release include a prohibition on speaking to the media.

Concerns have been raised about potential miscarriages of justice in the case, with allegations of perjury, coaching of witnesses, and police misconduct. While Essex Police maintain that the case has been thoroughly examined and no new evidence has been found, doubts persist regarding the convictions based on testimony from a convicted fraudster.

The case, which inspired the film “Essex Boys,” continues to be under scrutiny, with ongoing reviews and investigations into potential flaws in the legal process. Both the CCRC and Essex Police have committed to examining any new information that may arise in relation to the case.
