“Sister of Slain Hairdresser Calls for Domestic Abuse Registry”

Date:

The sister of a pregnant hairdresser who was fatally stabbed by her boyfriend is advocating for a registry of individuals with histories of domestic abuse. Jasmine Yates is pushing for an enhancement of Clare’s Law following the brutal attack on her sister, Alana Odysseos, by her partner, Shaine March, who had previously committed murder.

Alana, a mother of two, was viciously stabbed by March, a double killer, after enduring a prolonged period of domestic violence and coercive behavior. Tragically, she was in the early stages of pregnancy with her third child when March, who had a history of violent offenses, launched the fatal assault following a dispute about abortion.

Jasmine revealed that March had concealed the true extent of his prior criminal activities, including an incident where he fatally stabbed a teenager. Despite being recalled to jail for assaulting another pregnant girlfriend, Alana’s family was unaware of March’s violent past.

In an effort to prevent similar tragedies, Jasmine is calling for a reformation of Clare’s Law, advocating for a system where authorities proactively inform individuals if their partner has a violent or abusive background. She believes that through this initiative, Alana’s legacy can help protect others from suffering similar fates.

Alana, originally from Newmarket, Suffolk, had relocated to Walthamstow, east London, after escaping a previous abusive relationship in her early twenties. Jasmine described how Alana’s life took a dark turn after meeting March in 2024, leading to a cycle of abuse and control that ultimately culminated in her tragic death.

March’s manipulative tactics included isolating Alana from her family and friends, making baseless accusations of infidelity, and pressuring her to have an abortion against her wishes. Despite Jasmine’s efforts to intervene and warn Alana of the danger she was in, the victim remained under March’s influence, resulting in a devastating outcome.

The horrifying events of July 22, 2024, unfolded as March demanded Alana to undergo an abortion, prompting a fatal confrontation where Alana pleaded for her unborn child’s life as she was brutally attacked. Despite her desperate cries for help, Alana succumbed to her injuries as March callously walked away from the scene.

Jasmine recounted the heart-wrenching moment she learned of her sister’s murder and the subsequent legal proceedings that ultimately led to March’s life sentence. She expressed gratitude for the legal actions taken to ensure justice for Alana and prevent further tragedies.

Jasmine, alongside her older sisters, has garnered significant support for her petition, known as “Alana’s Law,” which aims to enhance existing disclosure schemes to better protect individuals from potential abusers. She emphasized the need for mandatory checks on offenders with histories of domestic violence and coercive control to safeguard vulnerable individuals from harm.

Recognizing the prevalence of domestic violence as a pervasive issue affecting women and girls, Jasmine hopes that stringent measures, including the establishment of a domestic violence register for high-risk offenders, can prevent future tragedies like the one that claimed her sister’s life.
