“Mother’s Advocacy: Conversations on Organ Donation Save Lives”

Date:

A mother is urging families to have conversations about organ donation after her son’s organs saved four lives. Theo Kempthorne, who passed away at the age of eight in 2024 due to severe brain damage, became a donor that helped critically ill individuals, including a child and a father in their 30s. Theo’s mother, Gemma, was inspired to consider organ donation after learning about the impact of life-saving transplants.

Gemma emphasized the importance of discussing organ donation beforehand, stating that people often avoid thinking about it until a crisis occurs. She shared her experience of making the decision for Theo and highlighted the significance of having clear wishes known to loved ones. The Mirror played a pivotal role in advocating for a change in organ donation laws to “deemed consent,” emphasizing the need for awareness and open communication about organ donation.

Theo, who was diagnosed with hydrocephalus before birth, underwent a shunt procedure as a baby to manage excess fluid in his brain. When the shunt failed at the age of eight, leading to irreversible brain damage, Gemma made the decision to donate Theo’s organs. His heart went to another child, while his kidneys, pancreas, and liver were transplanted into three individuals in their 30s.

Reflecting on her journey, Gemma recalled reading about organ donation while pregnant with Theo and how it influenced her decision-making process. Despite the pain of losing Theo, she finds solace in knowing that his legacy lives on through helping others. Gemma encourages adults to regularly revisit the organ donation register to ensure their wishes are known, emphasizing the need for open dialogue on the topic.

Anthony Clarkson from NHS Blood and Transplant commended Gemma for her decision, highlighting the impact of organ donation in saving lives. He encouraged readers to consider becoming organ donors and emphasized the importance of registering their decision to ease the burden on families during difficult times.
