Date:

An incident occurred in Paignton where a car was reportedly driven towards a group of men involved in a scuffle with the police.

At around 8:15 am, law enforcement responded to a disturbance on Esplanade Road after receiving reports of a fight among at least four men. Authorities swiftly arrived at the scene to locate a vehicle that has since been confiscated.

The altercation took place near the Hyde Dendy pub, although the establishment was closed at the time and not connected to the incident.

Ian Pagel, owner of the nearby Sealawn Guest House, witnessed what he described as a physical confrontation involving a group of adults.

According to Pagel, a car attempted to strike the group before police intervention. He stated, “I observed the arrival of law enforcement after the car incident. The police inspected all parked vehicles in the vicinity, checking their license plates.”

Another witness recounted to DevonLive that she saw four men engaging in a physical altercation, with one of them entering a car and driving towards another individual. She detailed, “Several men were involved in a physical altercation, throwing punches. One individual from a car joined the fight.”

The witness further described how one man, displaying a large cross tattoo on his back, confronted the others before getting into a car and attempting to drive towards another man who managed to evade the vehicle.

Following the incident, the men dispersed while the car headed towards the high street. Additional witnesses mentioned the presence of armed police and multiple police vehicles in the area.

Law enforcement later appeared with a recovery vehicle near the Ibis Styles Hotel. A spokesperson from Devon and Cornwall Police stated that the car involved had been recovered, and inquiries were ongoing, urging witnesses to come forward.

The spokesperson added, “Reports indicated a disturbance involving a small group of unidentified persons. Investigations are in progress to identify those involved and ensure their well-being.

“We have located and secured the vehicle believed to be linked to the incident. No arrests have been made yet, but we are confident in our investigation. Individuals with information are encouraged to reach out.”
