“Jet Fuel Price Surge Raises Concerns for UK Holidaymakers”

Date:

Summer has arrived, but British holidaymakers planning their vacations have been advised to be extra cautious. The surge in jet fuel prices by 120% since the start of the conflict in the Middle East has raised concerns about potential shortages in the upcoming months. Airlines have already increased ticket prices, and further disruptions are anticipated unless the Strait of Hormuz reopens promptly.

Before the conflict, Europe had approximately 37 days’ worth of fuel supply. However, this supply is now estimated to have decreased to around 30 days, with the International Energy Agency cautioning that 23 days is the critical threshold where certain airports might run out of fuel.

Following the recent approval for airlines to merge or cancel flights with a two-week notice period, concerns have been raised about the impact on passengers with special needs. The European Commission has indicated that disruptions due to the ongoing fuel crisis in the Middle East will be categorized as “exceptional circumstances,” potentially preventing holidaymakers from claiming financial compensation for flight changes.

Travel expert Declan Somers, CEO of Mobal, highlights the risk of potential flight disruptions causing families to be separated. As airlines consolidate flights to conserve fuel, families may find themselves reassigned to different seats on replacement aircraft.

Notably, there is no UK law mandating that children must be seated with their parents on flights. Airlines can legally separate children under five from their parents, although this goes against Civil Aviation Authority guidelines, which recommend keeping children within one seat row of accompanying adults to facilitate emergency evacuations.

As airlines continue to consolidate flights, families may be rebooked onto replacement flights without guarantees of sitting together. It is advised to book directly with airlines, pay for seat selection, and request assistance notes to be attached to the Passenger Name Record (PNR) to mitigate seating issues.

The situation is even more challenging for passengers with disabilities or specific medical requirements. Emergency rebookings often overlook specialized needs like extra legroom or specific seating arrangements for medical equipment. This erosion of consumer rights under “exceptional circumstances” may lead to difficulties in securing pre-arranged assistance for those in need.

Smaller regional airports are expected to bear the brunt of fuel shortages, lacking the on-site fuel storage capacity of major hubs like Heathrow. Experts recommend early planning, choosing early flights from larger airports, and ensuring medication supplies are arranged well in advance to minimize disruptions.

Despite the challenges, leading budget airlines in Europe, including Jet2, easyJet, and TUI, are optimistic about maintaining regular flight operations during the peak holiday season. The Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, assures that the government is prepared to work with the aviation sector to address any potential issues swiftly.

Several airlines, including British Airways, Tui, Virgin Atlantic, and Ryanair, have policies in place to prioritize seating families together, especially children under 12, to ensure a smooth travel experience. Passengers are advised to proactively choose seats, especially for families, to avoid seating disruptions.

The aviation industry remains committed to providing uninterrupted services, with efforts in place to address any potential challenges swiftly. Passengers are encouraged to plan ahead, stay informed, and take necessary precautions to ensure a hassle-free travel experience this summer.
