“Religious Leaders Fear ICE Raids During World Cup”

Date:

In a town serving as the World Cup headquarters for the England team, religious leaders express concerns about potential targeting by anti-immigrant ICE squads during the tournament. They anticipate increased presence of agents associated with Donald Trump, particularly with England’s accommodation at the Inn at Meadowbrook hotel in Johnson County near Kansas City. Local churches and organizations gather at a rally to voice apprehensions over potential ICE raids coinciding with the upcoming World Cup.

Carolyne Muriu, representing Advocates for Immigrant Rights and Reconciliation, highlights the shift from celebration to fear among immigrants during this time, emphasizing the need for self-protection in the absence of adequate support systems. Rabbi Moti Rieber, from the Kansas Interfaith Action, stresses the importance of raising awareness and unity among faith-based communities to stand in solidarity with immigrants as essential members of society.

As the arrival of Thomas Tuchel’s squad in Kansas approaches for the tournament, local authorities aim to showcase the positive aspects of the region during the World Cup, hoping to avoid any disruptions caused by potential ICE activities. The nationwide operations of ICE have instilled fear in numerous communities and resulted in tragic incidents, including the loss of 18 lives in ICE custody this year.

The turnout at the recent rally in Johnston County resonated positively with the community, reflecting a diverse mix of individuals standing together for social justice. Saaliha Khan, a social justice advocate, finds hope for the future in the collective support shown at the vigil, emphasizing the message of love conquering hate and the importance of standing alongside immigrant communities in times of uncertainty and fear.

Four nations, including Cape Verde, Curacao, Uzbekistan, and Jordan, will make their World Cup debuts in the upcoming tournament held across the US, Canada, and Mexico, commencing on June 10th and concluding with the final in New York City on Sunday, July 19th.
