A cruise ship, where a viral outbreak has led to three fatalities, is en route to the Canary Islands after a British crew member and two others were evacuated for urgent medical care. The outbreak is linked to hantavirus, originating from a birdwatching expedition in Argentina, which has claimed the lives of three individuals. Dr. Meghan Martin, also known as Beachgem10 on TikTok with 2.6 million followers, provided insights into the disease. She emphasized that while hantavirus is not highly transmissible between individuals, the Andes strain identified on the MV Hondius can cause severe symptoms.
Symptoms of hantavirus typically start with fever, fatigue, and muscle aches, progressing to respiratory issues after 4 to 10 days. Dr. Martin highlighted the rarity of hantavirus and the lack of specific treatment, advising caution around areas with rodent activity to prevent exposure.
The MV Hondius is heading to the Canary Islands, with arrangements for a charter flight to repatriate asymptomatic British passengers upon docking. The remaining Britons onboard are under close observation by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), with instructions to isolate for 45 days upon return.
Expedition guide Martin Anstree, now receiving specialized care in the Netherlands, reassured of his condition while his wife Nicola described the challenging experience. The UKHSA notes that hantavirus is a group of viruses carried by rodents and transmitted through rodent droppings and urine.
Symptoms of hantavirus may include severe breathing issues requiring hospitalization, with infections commonly occurring in rural and agricultural settings. Infections are primarily from inhaling contaminated air, with rare cases of transmission through cuts, eyes, or rodent bites.
