Iran has fired missiles at three warships in the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions with the US and jeopardizing the fragile ceasefire in place.
The senior military officials in Iran have accused the US of breaching the ceasefire by allegedly targeting an Iranian oil tanker heading towards the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, a separate vessel near the Emirati port of Fujairah was also reportedly attacked.
According to a statement from Iran’s IRIB state broadcaster released on Telegram, aerial attacks were conducted along the coastlines of Bandar Khamir, Sirik, and Qeshm Island. Iran’s armed forces swiftly retaliated by striking US military vessels, causing significant damage.
In response, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that American forces intercepted Iranian attacks and defended themselves as US Navy destroyers navigated through the Strait of Hormuz towards the Gulf of Oman. The US ships targeted by Iran included USS Truxtun, USS Rafael Peralta, and USS Mason, but no US assets were hit.
CENTCOM further mentioned that they neutralized incoming threats and targeted Iranian military facilities responsible for the attacks on US forces. Despite the escalation, CENTCOM emphasized that they are not seeking further confrontation but are prepared to safeguard American forces.
Following the incident, President Donald Trump downplayed the confrontation on social media, describing it as a successful passage of US warships through the strait amid Iranian attacks. He used a metaphor likening the situation to a butterfly gracefully descending, while emphasizing the strength of the US military and criticizing Iran’s leadership.
Trump affirmed the US Navy’s readiness to continue their naval blockade, referring to it as a “Wall of Steel” to deter any future aggressions.
