“Wildfire Ravages Chernobyl Exclusion Zone Amid Landmine Threat”

Date:

A massive wildfire spanning 1,100 hectares is currently raging within the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Ukrainian firefighters are facing challenges in containing the blaze due to the presence of landmines in the area, according to emergency services.

The fire has triggered a significant emergency response, involving units from the State Emergency Service, specialized equipment forces, and other service crews working together to extinguish the flames. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) has reported that the fire is rapidly spreading across the region, fueled by strong gusts of wind.

The situation is further complicated by dry weather conditions, high winds, and the risk of landmines in certain areas, hindering firefighting efforts. As a result, some sections of the forest have temporarily suspended operations due to the threat of explosive ordnance.

Various emergency response units, specialized equipment, and personnel from other services have been deployed to combat the wildfire. Rescue teams are intensifying their efforts to contain the sources of ignition and prevent the fire from spreading further.

Concerns are growing over the potential for a new nuclear incident amidst the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, four decades after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recently issued an urgent alert following a fatal incident at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Additionally, reports indicate that the protective dome over the Chernobyl reactor, damaged in a previous Russian strike, remains a target for ongoing attacks.

According to Shaun Burnie, a senior nuclear specialist for Greenpeace Ukraine, Russia’s actions are perceived as an ongoing nuclear war against Ukraine and Europe, highlighting the persistent threats faced by the region.
