“Hantavirus Outbreak on Luxury Cruise Raises Global Concern”

Date:

A medical professional aboard the hantavirus-infected cruise ship voiced concerns about the emerging disease. Dr. Stephen Kornfeld, a U.S. doctor, unexpectedly found himself dealing with the hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius ship after embarking from Argentina.

Reports indicate that eight cases have been identified, with three fatalities. Hantavirus, typically spread by rodents through contact with their bodily fluids, has infected five individuals aboard. Human-to-human transmission is rare.

Dr. Kornfeld shared his experience, mentioning that he assumed the role of ship’s doctor after the original medic fell ill. He described symptoms observed in patients, highlighting the rapid progression of the illness and the lack of critical care facilities on the ship.

The luxury cruise, managed by Oceanwide Expeditions, departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1, and is scheduled to reach Spain’s Canary Islands on May 10. Among the initial 150 passengers and crew from 28 countries, some disembarked on April 24 in St Helena, a British Overseas Territory.

British individuals on board are advised to self-isolate upon return to the UK due to confirmed or suspected hantavirus cases. Efforts are underway by several countries to trace contacts related to the ship.

The outbreak has raised global concern, prompting health authorities to monitor the situation closely. The World Health Organization reported that the first two confirmed hantavirus cases had recent travel history in South America, where the virus-carrying rat species resides.

Given the virus’s up to six-week incubation period, additional cases may surface in the near future. Dr. Kornfeld addressed his own risk of contracting hantavirus, emphasizing precautions taken while caring for patients during the cruise.
