“Former Lostprophets Member Ian Watkins Faces Extortion in Prison”

Date:

Ian Watkins, the former Lostprophets member convicted of child sexual offences, reportedly faced extortion threats while incarcerated at HMP Wakefield. Prior to his tragic death by stabbing in October last year, Watkins allegedly received letters demanding money under threats of violence. Witnesses at Leeds Crown Court testified to seeing Watkins covered in blood following the incident and revealed details of the threatening letters he had received, labeling him as a “snitch” and demanding payment for specific items.

Two individuals, Rico Gedel and Samuel Dodsworth, are currently on trial for the murder of Watkins and possession of a makeshift knife in prison. Prison officer Simon Rothwell, who had been stationed on the same wing as Watkins for a decade, described him as a vulnerable target due to his perceived wealth. Rothwell recounted building a rapport with Watkins and mentioned the singer’s history of being targeted for money by other inmates.

The court heard how Rothwell had attempted to assist Watkins after he received threatening letters, advising him to isolate in his cell for safety. Despite this, Watkins chose not to follow the advice. Following the incident, additional security measures were implemented, and the content of the threatening letters was disclosed.

Witness statements from workmen who were present during the incident described seeing Watkins with severe injuries, including a large wound on his collarbone and jaw. The swift response of prison staff was crucial in providing immediate assistance to Watkins. The singer had been serving a 29-year sentence for child sexual offences since 2013 and is also linked to attempted rape charges. The trial regarding his death is ongoing.
