“Tenerife Protests Cruise Ship with Hantavirus”

Date:

Massive demonstrations are taking place in Tenerife as port workers and locals protest against the scheduled arrival of a cruise ship carrying passengers and crew infected with the hantavirus.

Spanish authorities are making arrangements to receive over 140 individuals from the hantavirus-affected cruise ship set to reach the Canary Islands this weekend. Health officials are planning cautious evacuations for the passengers and crew.

The vessel, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, is anticipated to arrive in Tenerife over the weekend. Despite the absence of current symptoms among the remaining individuals on board, concerns persist among Canary Islands residents about potential virus transmission in the local community.

While Madrid politicians argue for the necessity of aiding those on the ship, residents have taken to the streets with signs expressing their fears and discontent with the government’s decision to allow the ship to dock in Tenerife.

The President of the Tenerife Port Authority, Pedro Suárez, outlined the transfer plans for the passengers, emphasizing safety measures. However, protests continue with demands for safety assurances from the dock workers’ union, threatening to impede the ship’s entry.

Locals voiced frustrations over the decision, citing concerns about public health risks and government neglect towards the Canary Islands. The UK Health Security Agency confirmed the health monitoring of British nationals on board and detailed plans for their safe return.

Preparations are in place for the ship’s arrival in Tenerife, with UK Government staff ready to assist British passengers during disembarkation. Safety measures and medical support will be provided during the repatriation process to ensure the well-being of passengers and crew.
