“Public Outrage Over Retailers Firing Employees for Confronting Shoplifters”

Date:

After Sainsbury’s terminated an employee for confronting shoplifters, Mirror readers shared their views on the controversial decision. Gary MacArthur was fired after 15 years for stopping a thief attempting to steal high-end champagne, leading to a violent altercation at the South London branch. Sainsbury’s cited gross misconduct for not following their guidelines on incident prevention.

This incident follows the dismissal of a Waitrose employee, Walker Smith, who intervened to prevent a shoplifter from stealing Easter eggs, breaching company policy against interference. The public and politicians criticized Waitrose, calling for a boycott in response.

In another case, a Morrisons store manager, Sean Egan, was fired for confronting a violent shoplifter after nearly three decades of service. Despite support from Met Police chief Sir Mark Rowley, Egan lost his job for engaging with the aggressive criminal.

Shoplifting in England and Wales has surged to a 20-year high, with over 530,000 incidents reported in the year ending March 2025, a 20% increase from the previous year. Retailers face an average of 1,300 violent incidents against staff daily.

Sainsbury’s decision to dismiss MacArthur came after he had helped save the life of a security guard, performing CPR when the guard suffered a stroke. The lack of security allowed the subsequent theft in December, leading to MacArthur’s termination in March.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson emphasized the rising threats of violence and theft in stores, prompting increased security measures and collaboration with law enforcement. The company’s guidance prioritizes safety and aims to prevent escalating incidents.

MacArthur expressed devastation over the company’s action, recounting the day’s events that led to his termination. After aiding the collapsed security guard, he confronted the shoplifter, familiar with his criminal history. Despite efforts to handle the situation peacefully, the thief turned aggressive, leading to his eventual arrest by the police.
