Mother jailed for role in toddler’s death amid boyfriend’s abuse

Date:

A mother expressed dismay during a police raid on her residence following the death of her son at the hands of her boyfriend, resulting in injuries comparable to those from a severe car accident.

Zoe Coutts, aged 35, was sentenced to prison for enabling Scott O’Connor, her partner she met on Bumble, to harm two-year-old Kol Page.

Evidence presented in court revealed a pattern of escalating violence towards the toddler while under the couple’s care. Kol succumbed to injuries sustained after a violent episode by O’Connor in April 2022, which left him with severe brain damage ultimately leading to his death two years later.

Coutts received a 10-year prison term for her role in her child’s demise, while O’Connor, 36, was sentenced to 18 years for manslaughter with an additional five-year license extension.

The court learned that Kol’s injuries were of a magnitude comparable to those from a serious road accident or a fall from a significant height onto a hard surface.

Coutts, from Kent, faced accusations of inflicting catastrophic harm on her child alongside her boyfriend and attempting to evade accountability by fabricating false narratives, even going as far as blaming the child for his injuries due to alleged clumsiness.

Video footage released by the police captured Coutts lamenting the situation to officers upon the arrival of paramedics, exclaiming, “It’s not fair.”

The tragic discovery of Kol, on April 25, 2022, unresponsive with facial bruises and a critical abdominal injury believed to result from a stamp or punch, prompted immediate medical attention. Despite surviving for over two years, Kol succumbed to his injuries at the age of four years and three months on June 29, 2024.

During sentencing, Coutts, visibly emotional, was admonished by Judge Mr. Justice Johnson for failing to safeguard her son from O’Connor despite clear signs of abuse.

The judge highlighted Coutts’ complicity, stating, “You must have been aware that the injuries were inflicted by Scott O’Connor. Instead of shielding Kol from O’Connor, you chose to continue residing with him.”

Both Coutts and O’Connor were reprimanded for their lack of remorse and refusal to accept responsibility for their actions.

Kol’s distressing ordeal included escalating bruising, with medical experts testifying that the injuries sustained on April 9, 2022, likely resulted from two punches.

Prosecutors revealed that rather than seeking medical help for the bruised child, the couple opted to attend a football match.

Jurors were presented with incriminating text messages exchanged between Coutts and O’Connor, underscoring the callousness of their actions.

Emergency services intervened on April 25, 2022, transporting Kol to the hospital for emergency surgery to address three injuries to his small bowel, caused by significant force to the abdomen.

Tragically, Kol’s injuries were so severe that medical professionals could not adequately alleviate his pain without risking his life, culminating in his passing after receiving care from foster parents.

In a poignant victim impact statement, Kol’s foster parents recounted the immense pain and suffering he endured, underscoring their commitment to caring for him despite the challenges.

Legal representatives for Coutts and O’Connor sought to shift blame during the trial, with O’Connor claiming a momentary loss of control leading to the tragic outcome.

Ultimately, the jury acquitted the couple of murder charges, convicting Coutts of causing or allowing the death of a child, and O’Connor of manslaughter.

O’Connor’s deliberate assault on the defenseless toddler was condemned by the judge, who highlighted the severity of the injuries inflicted and his lack of remorse.

Det Chief Insp Kate Blackburn, who spearheaded the investigation, emphasized the egregious nature of the abuse suffered by Kol, condemning the deception orchestrated by Coutts and O’Connor.

The NSPCC and other stakeholders decried the heartbreaking case, stressing the vulnerability of children to abuse and the need for collective vigilance in safeguarding their well-being.

The tragic fate of Kol serves as a stark reminder of the imperative to protect and nurture the most vulnerable members of society, with calls for heightened awareness and intervention to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
